What is a fancy color diamond?
A fancy color diamond has a distinct color beyond the D to Z range: yellow, pink, blue, green, orange and more. The color comes from trace elements or structural changes in the crystal.
How color is graded
Color is described by hue, tone and saturation. GIA names the strength of color in this order:
- Faint, Very Light, Light
- Fancy Light, Fancy
- Fancy Intense, Fancy Vivid
- Fancy Deep, Fancy Dark
In most colors, stronger and purer color is rarer and carries a higher value. A soft blush can be as beautiful as a vivid stone, just in a different way.
Natural, lab-grown or treated
Colored diamonds can be natural, lab-grown or color-treated. The laboratory report states which one a stone is. Ask for the report and read it before you decide.
Choosing a setting
Metal changes how a colored stone feels. Rose gold softens pink stones, yellow gold deepens yellow ones, and white metals let the color stand alone. We will show you the same stone in different metals.
